Worldwide, the Filipino martial arts are usually called one of three terms, “Kali”, “Eskrima” or “Arnis”. With hundreds of years of armed conflict between many cultures, Kali is the consolidation of their vast combative influences. A sampling of these cultures include the Malay, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Arab and the indigenous tribes of the Philippine archipelagos. Kali pooled together the proven fighting techniques of Europe, the Middle East and Asia into a single effective martial art.

It was during this time that he attended his first Sayoc Kali seminar. This introduction led him to focus primarily on Sayoc Kali. After moving out to the west coast, Guro Steve began training with Guro Travis Downing and Guro Joey Pena’s backyard group; While his primary arts were still Sayoc Kali and Atienza Kali, he was also training in Muay Thai, CrossFit, and Inosanto blend; this eventually became Sayoc LA.

Currently, Guro Steve holds instructor rank in Sayoc Kali and Atienza Kali.
